The Software Engineering Lab (SWE Lab) is part of Department VI (Computer Science and Media). Its subject areas include programming and compiler design as well as software engineering and software architecture. The lab focuses on fundamental methods and practices for developing high-quality software, independently of specific technologies.

The laboratory rooms are used primarily for practical classes in Programming and Software Engineering. They also host classes in subjects such as Human–Computer Interaction, Software Project and Compiler Design within the Media Informatics and Computer Engineering degree programmes. Development environments for various programming languages and a selection of modelling tools are available for practical work.

Rooms E16a and E16b provide 26 and 27 PC/hybrid workstations respectively, equipped with computers running Debian Linux. The monitors can be used either with the lab PCs or with users’ own laptops via USB-C. All lab PCs have internet access and are connected to terminal servers. Users sign in with their BHT account (HRZ) and can access their personal data from any workstation.

For examinations, the lab PCs can be operated in a Moodle-based exam mode with restricted network access.

Room E17 is available for meetings, seminars and small-team collaboration.

  • Rooms 16a and 16b:
    • 32-inch, high-contrast monitors with hybrid functionality.
      • The monitors can be used either with the lab PCs (Debian Linux) or with users’ own laptops via USB-C/Thunderbolt.
      • If a laptop is connected to the monitor while the lab PC is switched off, the USB-C cable provides access to the mouse and keyboard, transmits the display signal, and charges the laptop via Power Delivery.
    • The monitors offer a wide range of height adjustment, allowing the laptop screen and monitor to be used side by side.
       
  • Room 16a:
    • There are now 26 PC/hybrid workstations instead of 12 PC workstations (target: 22).
       
  • Room 16b:
    • There are now 27 PC/hybrid workstations, thanks to further optimization of the room layout (target: 22).
    • The cable for the wall-mounted display can be connected either to the lecturer’s laptop or to workstation swe-F7, which has an additional HDMI output; see the monitor mount.
      This option was added at short notice at a lecturer’s request.

The failure of the ventilation system in Core 1 continues to have a significant impact on air quality.

Please ventilate the rooms thoroughly at least at the beginning, halfway through, and at the end of every class. Better still, keep the rooms continuously cross-ventilated by leaving the corridor doors open.

CO₂ monitors (Technoline WL1030) in all public rooms provide information about the current air quality.
