In which module and with which objective was the robot Pepper used as a game master?

The Pepper robot was used for the first time in the summer semester 2022 as a Game Master in the Business Administration Digital Economy degree programme. The students tested the first version of the game in Business English entitled ‘Make or Do Game’.

The ‘Make or Do Game’ application was programmed by doctoral student Rezault Tutul using Android Studio IDE (Integrated Development Environment) and Kotlin.

The aim is to offer an interactive and playful grammar exercise on the use of the verbs ‘make’ and ‘do’ in various idioms with the help of the robot Pepper in order to increase the motivation to learn and the enjoyment of grammar exercises.

The Pepper robot starts the game with the welcome animation and voice output. After the user's voice input, the application asks for the user name and displays the options, e.g. test or exercise. As soon as the Test or Exercise option is selected, the application displays the question and the answer from the database. At the same time, the robot speaks the question and moves to reinforce the interaction. For the test option there is a time limit for the answer, for the exercise option there is no time limit. The robot shows a sad or happy animation depending on the answer. At the end of the session, after about 10 questions, the application displays the final score and asks for an evaluation of the interaction. As soon as the button to end the application is pressed, the robot starts the final speech and animation and saves the score in a database.
